In the past, the only measure of a heat pump’s efficiency was its COP. But a few years ago, an EU directive came into force, obliging manufacturers to declare the average annual efficiency of a heat pump – SCOP. Heat pumps are now being tested according to a single methodology, including for cold climates. The SCOP coefficient shows the ratio of the electricity consumption of a heat pump to the heat energy consumed throughout the year, under various weather conditions.
